Rhythmic variability in Swiss German dialects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Speech rhythm can be measured acoustically in terms of durational characteristics of consonantal and vocalic intervals. The present paper investigated how acoustically measurable rhythm varies across dialects of Swiss German. Rhythmic measurements (%V, C, V, varcoC, varcoV, rPVI-C, nPVIC, nPVI-V) were carried out on four sentences of six speakers from eight Swiss dialects. Results indicate that there are significant differences across the dialects in some rhythm measures but not in others and that dialects can be grouped according to rhythmic characteristics. متن کاملDisentangling sources of rhythmic variability between dialects
Speech rhythm is highly variable. Previous studies reported variability between languages, dialects, speakers, and labelers. Research further revealed an effect of sentence in the rhythmic characteristics of speakers of the same language. In the present study we tested whether the effect of sentence material is constant across varieties of the same language. We addressed this question by an exa...
متن کاملCompilation of a Swiss German Dialect Corpus and its Application to PoS Tagging
Swiss German is a dialect continuum whose dialects are very different from Standard German, the official language of the German part of Switzerland. However, dealing with Swiss German in natural language processing, usually the detour through Standard German is taken. As writing in Swiss German has become more and more popular in recent years, we would like to provide data to serve as a steppin...
متن کاملDeclarative sentence intonation patterns in 8 swiss German dialects
This study examines declarative sentence intonation contours in 8 vastly different Swiss German dialects by the application of the Command-Response model. Fundamental frequency patterns of a controlled declarative sentence are analyzed on the global and local level of intonation. The results provide evidence of a different patterning for the dialects in the context of how global and local level...
متن کاملVowel convergence and divergence between two Swiss German dialects
Short-term accommodation is considered as one of the main factors in dialect levelling and the spread of linguistic innovations. This study investigates how speakers of Grison and Zurich German two Swiss German dialects shift their productions of short vowels after being exposed to each other's dialect in a dialogue. We found asymmetrical behaviour in accommodation between the two dialects: on ...
